Dry Skin? Flakey Skin? Dehydrated Skin? What Skincare Ingredients Should You Be Looking For?
As we age, not only does our skin produce less oils, it also loses it’s ability to retain moisture. So, unless you want dry, dull, flakey, crepey, shriveled up skin, then you have to find a really good balance with your skincare regiment. Just as important as it is to include ingredients that help to reverse some of the signs of aging and some of the damage that we’ve done over the years, it’s just as important to include ingredients that hydrate and moisturize the skin because that’s what’s going to give your skin that supple, smooth, plumpness.
*DEHYDRATED skin lacks WATER
*DRY skin lacks Oil, LIPIDS and MOISTURE
Dehydrated skin tends to look dull and feel tight, even when properly moisturized.
Dry skin can result in rough, dry or flaky skin
Humectants: A humectant is an ingredient that draws water molecules out of its environment towards itself. This helps rehydrate the skin’s surface, but can cause some irritation to the skin in high concentrations.
Humectants = Hydration
Examples of Humectants are:
Hyaluronic Acid
Glyerin
Glycerol
Propylene glycol
Urea
Gycolic acid
Lactic acid
Honey
Glycolic Acid
Lactic Acid
Sortbitol
Emollients: An emollient is an ingredient that smooths the skin’s surface by filling in cracks between skin cells. Emollients include ingredients that replenish your skin’s oil, lipid and moisture barrier.
Emollients = Moisture
Examples of Emollients:
Ceramides
Castor Oil
Aloe
Sesame seed oil
Safflower oil
Argan Oil
Olive Oil
Coconut Oil
Occlusive Agents: Ingredients in skincare that form a film on the skin and prevent water loss. They can be very effective, but can feel waxy or greasy on the skin. They typically have a very thick texture and come in a tub.
Occlusive Agents:
*Prevent Water Loss
*Protect against Environmental Factors
Examples of Occlusive Agents:
Petrolatum
Petroleum Jelly
Mineral Oil
Castor Oil
Parrafin
Lanolin
Shea Butter
Silicones
